Install Garageband On Catalina
GarageBand for PC and Mac. Written by Apple. Category: Music Release date: 2021-04-06 Licence: Free Software version: 10.4.3 File size: 964.10 MB Compatibility: Available on Windows 10, Windows 8.1/8, Windows 7, Windows Vista and Mac OS 10-11 10.13.6. The only part is there isn’t any 64bit version of anything. The Catalina article says the drivers should still work, but after installing the drivers I still cannot see it access my device in OS X for recording - it is not recognized at all as a sound input or output device at the OS level, nor at any other level, it’s not available as an option in GarageBand, or ableton.
I just checked the App Store for updates. As expected, there were updates for several apps in order to add Big Sur support:
- GarageBand
- iMovie
- Keynote
- Numbers
- Pages
- Xcode
I clicked the “Update All” button to be informed “GarageBand can’t be installed on … because macOS version 11 or later is required.”
Seriously? Big Sur just shipped yesterday and Apple has already made a flagship app incompatible with everything else?
And why is it being presented on my list of updates if it’s incompatible? In the past, the App Store would never show incompatible updates.
This is absolutely shameless self-promotion. If they think this is somehow going to convince people to upgrade their comptuers to a new and untested operating system, they’re completely nuts.
UPDATE: Further investigation (see comments below) indicates that this was a mistake, not an intent to drop support for GarageBand on macOS versions 10.*. But at this time (November 17, 2020), the mistake has not yet been corrected.
To get the latest features and maintain the security, stability, compatibility, and performance of your Mac, it's important to keep your software up to date. Apple recommends that you always use the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac.
Learn how to upgrade to macOS Big Sur, the latest version of macOS.
Check compatibility
The version of macOS that came with your Mac is the earliest version it can use. For example, if your Mac came with macOS Big Sur, it will not accept installation of macOS Catalina or earlier.
If a macOS can't be used on your Mac, the App Store or installer will let you know. For example, it might say that it's not compatible with this device or is too old to be opened on this version of macOS. To confirm compatibility before downloading, check the minimum hardware requirements:
- macOS Catalina 10.15 hardware requirements
- macOS Mojave 10.14 hardware requirements
- macOS High Sierra 10.13 hardware requirements
- macOS Sierra 10.12 hardware requirements
- OS X El Capitan 10.11 hardware requirements
- OS X Yosemite 10.10 hardware requirements
