Good lord get yourself ready for this one. If you happen to already be a fan of the Drakengard 3 game or franchise, then you may have a slightly better idea of just what the heck is going on but if not, Pappa Game-Reviewer is going to take care of you and try to make sense of these storylines and let you know if this is the game for you. Prepare yourself for sexy girls riding dragons and let’s get into it.

Gameplay

It’s a hack and slash game and that takes up a considerable amount of the game. Other than that, its moving from one fight to another and exploring the world with areal combat scenes every now and again. As it is by the same creator, there are some serious similarities between this title and NieR: Automata; things handle similarly, combat is nearly identical and the writing is equal in quality and oddity.

The Look

With some downright beautiful visuals and world design and a fantastic amount of travelling so that you can see it all, I am somewhat reminded of the Devil May Cry 4 game with gives a similar air of traversal and uncertainty. You play a character on a quest to another location and must fight various battles and monsters along the way, there is a strange feeling of never knowing which door is going to lead to another battle. An enemy could be around the corner at any point and you have no idea because the world sees alive yet suspiciously quiet at all times. If it wasn’t for the music, you’d feel as though the world was empty.

A small detail that I appreciated is how covered in blood you get in combat. As the player is dressed all in white, it only makes sense so I’m glad that they thought to include it.

Speaking of the music. Oh, my goodness, this has a soundtrack for the ages. Similar to the ethereal and intriguing exploration music you get from Nier, it engages you in the world and fills you with a bizarre sense of wonder. Then the combat kicks off and the score sets the scene in a way that I just can’t get over.

Story

Right, here’s the crazy bit of it all; the story. Set many years before the previous games, as a prequel, there are actually multiple timelines, called branches, that tell a few slightly different stories as things progress. There is a lot to this game and I’m sure that if you play it and actually pay attention from start to finish that you will have a grand old time and understand everything just fine.

The dialogue throughout this title is downright cheesy and I love it. No one talks like an actual person would and instead run around with anime style one liners and monologues around every corner. It’s pretty great.

This is a surprisingly good game with a lot to it. If you like a game that really doesn’t take itself too seriously then you very well should enjoy this one.
